WATER BABIES - FILM REVIEW
Director Josh Garretson encapsulates the very real horrors of pregnancy mishaps, and personifies those fears into a tangible monster in his film, “Water Babies.”
“Water Babies” tells the story of a young couple desperately wishing to have a baby. This desperation leads the couple to a cursed lake where many babies in the early 20th century were drowned.
This film uses stories from indigenous people of North America to tackle a very serious issue that may hit very close to women and their families. As it presents itself as a supernatural horror, this film delicately handles its subject matter while illustrating a captivating story.
The performances from Kenna Denali and Spencer Jarman were superb. Their chemistry felt very natural as they portrayed the complete range of a hopeful couple to one that faces detrimental news.
Josh Garretson also did an excellent job editing this film as it was stylistically intriguing, enhancing the emotions felt from the characters without ever stepping in the way of the storytelling.
Overall, this film was touching, well-paced, and serves as a powerful metaphor for the fears a woman can go through before, during, and after motherhood.
