FILM REVIEW: ENCOUNTERS

“Encounters” is an authentic and moving short film about a married ride-share driver named Joe, who begins his workday after having a one-night stand. As he picks up various passengers, Joe’s ethics are questioned and the gray areas of his marriage are challenged.

Director, Marley DiAngelo, takes the mundane concept of a ride-share driver’s day and writes a very compelling piece through each stranger’s interactions. As the film mostly takes place inside a car, this simple setting is enhanced by the passenger’s discussion with Joe. David Bianco’s performance as Joe was superb, as he navigated through each different emotion after each encounter. Although we are introduced to Joe as a narcissistic playboy, the film surprisingly brings audiences around to almost have sympathy for him in the most unexpected way.

One does not expect so much drama to happen during a ride-share driver’s day, however this film constantly takes you through a lot of turns (in more ways than one), and subverts the viewer’s expectation throughout. The overall story outline was well-crafted as each scene directly caused the next event. 

Marley DiAngelo brings together a truly authentic human experience of err, with no character completely being in the wrong or right. Each character is trying to navigate the complexities of life, and is only left with the experiences of others to learn from. Overall, this film beautifully captures life’s absolute chaotic and sometimes cruel irony.
